Hiring one expert in design and marketing, or hiring an expert for each one
Which is best for entrepreneurs? Hiring one expert in design and marketing, or hiring an expert for each one
Before I get started let me tell you that the answer will shock you! Let’s Begin…
There is a concept in economics called “comparative advantage” and this concept is explained as follows:
Each country has a comparative advantage in the production of a product compared to another country, this advantage comes from several aspects, including: (low costs, production speed, quality)
Let us take an example to make the idea more clear… Brazil produces coffee and cotton and Egypt produces coffee and cotton, that is, the same commodities. If Brazil distributes all the factors of production to cotton, it will produce 12 units, and if it distributes it to coffee, it will produce 6 units of coffee. Whereas, if Egypt distributed all the factors of production to coffee, it would produce 1 unit, while if it directed it to cotton, it would produce 10 units.
Here you will immediately say that it is in the interest of Brazil to be self-sufficient because it produces more than Egypt; And here I will shock you and say that you are wrong, how is that?
Read on…
When we return to the example, we see that Brazil gives up 6 units of coffee in exchange for 12 units of cotton, while Egypt gives up 10 units of cotton to produce 1 unit of coffee. Hence the interest of the two countries in specialization.
Egypt specializes in the production of cotton and Brazil specializes in the production of coffee, then we will reach a combination that suits both parties. It is in Brazil’s interest to give up 3 units of coffee in exchange for 10 units of cotton, meaning that if she gives up 6 units of coffee, she will get 20 units of cotton, which is more B 8 units from what it was getting when it was producing cotton itself and was not specialized in it, while it is in Egypt’s interest to give up 10 units of cotton in exchange for 3 units of coffee, as it was giving up 10 units of cotton in exchange for 1 unit Than coffee only, this specialty will surely be more beneficial for both countries.
Because Egypt has a comparative advantage in cotton production and Brazil has a comparative advantage in coffee production, and as we mentioned this comparative advantage is due to several factors, including low costs, production speed, and product quality compared to another country that produces the same product.
Here, you will ask, what is the relationship between what was mentioned with employment, experience and my projects?
I’ll tell you, let’s apply the principle of “comparative advantage” to employees.
The employee has limited energy and a comparative advantage in a specialty, meaning that you may find someone who masters writing content with design (proficient in Photoshop and Illustrator), and you will choose him to hire him in your project and give him the salary of one employee, thinking that this is more productive and less costly for you, you are wrong!
This employee has a comparative advantage in only one specialty that I mentioned, that is, he may be specialized in writing content and others, but he has a comparative advantage in writing content more than design, as he produces a more professional quality of writing than he produces in design.
And when you employ him in writing and designing together, you are dispersing his effort between the two works, which affects even what is relatively distinct in him, that is, it affects “content writing” and this means less production and a lower quality because of the lack of specialization in the work.
However, if you hire someone who has a comparative advantage in writing as a content writer, and then hire someone who has a comparative advantage in design as a designer, you will find that your productivity has increased many times and brought you more benefits than what you would pay as salaries for these two employees combined.
Have you ever asked yourself, why don’t the big companies work like yours and hire one expert who is skilled in all fields with the salary of one or even two people instead of paying the salaries of 4 people?
Because they know that what you consider to be “savvy, reduce costs, and sting” is harmful to you and your project in the first place, before you think that it only harms the employee! In terms of more effort and less return.
We conclude from the above that hiring one expert who does everything, obstructs the wheel of your project, causes damage to it and increases costs (if you look at it from a different angle), while specialization and hiring every expert in his place gives you greater production and better quality, and finally more returns that cover you many times what I paid the staff.
